NBIM's 2025 stress tests are out - 4 scenarios applied to a ~$2T portfolio: AI correction, fragmented world, regional debt crisis, and extreme weather events. Here's what stood out & the translation into insurance terms.

1️⃣ Rising equity risk premiums signal rising uncertainty.

In insurance term: This is like insurance market raising deductibles. When there are more risks, insurers may not stop writing it all together, they demand more premium, tighter terms, and higher deductible.

2️⃣ Climate risk is a transmission channel: Too hot, too cold, too wet, too wild -> food prices, inflation expectation -> growth concerns.

In insurance term: This is business interruption logic at a system scale. Climate shocks ripple through systems the same way a factory fire affects not just property, but business income, supply chains, and liability. The initial loss is rarely the final loss.

3️⃣ History reminds us that shocks arrive regularly, even if the trigger is never the same. Since 1997, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 remains the most severe stress, underscoring how concentration shapes system resilience.

In insurance term: This is like aggregation risk. Insurers may not go insolvent because of one claim, but because of multiple claims stack up from the same event. Think portfolio-wide Probable Maximum Loss.

What signals are you watching?

Thanks to the transparency of firms like NBIM, we get to learn from the best.
